A power strike threatens to plunge the region into darkness, while the city hosts the iconic Miss Universe pageant and the US space station, Skylab, crashes just beyond the city’s suburbs. Last Days of the Space Age is an eight-part dramedy series set in 1979 Western Australia, when Perth was at the center of the world’s headlines. Principal photography on the Disney+ Australia original Last Days of the Space Age, from writer / creator David Chidlow, began in Australia in July. There's a difference between raising the stakes and a revolving door, and Hawkins' demise made him feel more like a plot device than the three-dimensional character he was becoming. While Chicago Fire‘s Matthew Casey is living in Oregon caring for the Darden boys, Jesse Spencer, the actor who plays him has returned to his home country of Australia to star in a new upcoming Disney+ Australian series titled Last Days of the Space Age. Giving the duo a milestone moment and then Hawkins a rushed death is the kind of awkward writing this series normally doesn't do. If the series is paving the way for Gallo to return to Violet, viewers will be skeptical of caring about them again when they've seen how Violet and Hawkins fared. To have the audience reinvest in Violet and Hawkins' relationship in "Hold On Tight" only to get rid of Hawkins two weeks later was harsh on the fans. He certainly had more personality than many of those recurring characters.īut unless Nicholas was unavailable in the future, the way Hawkins' exit was written came across as Chicago Fire killing him just to kill someone off. And with Hawkins having transferred elsewhere, he would have fit perfectly into Chicago Fire's rotating cast of "white shirts" who pop up whenever they're needed. Those two could have had more great scenes together. There seemed to be mutual respect forming with Gallo after Gallo saw Hawkins' distress and love for Violet. The character had untapped potential since publicly reuniting with Violet in Season 11, Episode 1, "Hold On Tight." Audiences had the chance to find out who Evan Hawkins was since all of his professional drama had been resolved. Hawkins' death was not one of those stories. The series clearly set Hawkins up for a fall and the audience up for his death, which made killing him not only unnecessary, but empty instead of emotional.Ĭhicago Fire does a lot of things incredibly well, including telling complicated stories like the Brett and Casey saga that the series can turn into a positive for Brett. Then after the collapse, Chicago Fire ended with the expected moment of a sobbing Violet being the last person to work on her boyfriend before being literally pulled away. Hawkins and Violet said "I love you" for the first time on-screen. Brett brought Violet to a surprise lunch with Hawkins so the couple could get in some extra quality time. Red flags were present throughout the episode. It was the most sudden death since ER dumped a helicopter on Dr. A man stumbled out of the stage door so Hawkins rushed to help him - and Chicago Fire dropped the facade of the building on them both. That's because seemingly out of nowhere, the series killed Hawkins instead. While the episode made viewers believe that Violet's ex-boyfriend Blake Gallo would die after he couldn't be located, Gallo was proven to be alive. The major set piece of "Completely Shattered" was a burning movie theater that brought out nearly everyone on Chicago Fire.
